The original course was set out in 1895 on the advice of Old Tom Morris of St. Andrews and it remained largely unaltered until 1945 when James Braid was invited to advise on the layout. Braid visited the course early the following year and drew up plans for a number of alterations. It can be concluded that much of the classic layout of the course at Barnton can be attributed to the skills of James Braid.
His cunning in bunker placement is as pertinent now as it ever was. The devilish locations of the left hand bunker at the 4th, the right hand green-side bunkers at the 7th, the angle of the green and bunker placements at the 13th are perfect examples of “Braid’s brawest.”
It is set in beautiful parkland and one of the features is the variety and positioning of many mature trees. The members take considerable pride in the quality of presentation of the Course and visitors to Barnton will enjoy a day’s golf on lush and manicured fairways in a golfing haven only six miles from Edinburgh city centre.
Former Open Champions Henry Cotton, Peter Thomson, Bobby Locke, Gary Player and Tony Jacklin have all played here at some stage.
