Kirkhill Golf Club was founded in 1910, and was designed in the days when nature could not be manipulated - basically the layout of the course was made to fit the land available.
The original Trustees of the Club showed courage and imagination in requesting from James Braid an 18 hole layout. Braid, the first man to win the Open Championship five times, had a prodigious talent both as a golfer and a course designer, and with a minimum of excavation work, he completed the task in four months, and later found time to create courses at both Gleneagles and Carnoustie.
This is a hilly course but offers a fair test of golf and unsurpassed views across the city of Glasgow. The panorama from the 6th green and 12th tees is impressive with views towards the west and the Arrochar Alps, Ben Lomond, north to the Campsie Fells.
Kirkhill is a well laid out course, it is not overly long but it is a tough challenge to hit the small and very tricky greens. If you wish to shoot well here you have to get off to a good start as the middle six can upset even the best of players. All in all a fantastic place to play golf!!
Kirkhill Golf Club has been fortunate to have a wide cross section of members, ensuring a strong, vibrant and healthy membership throughout its history; they look forward to their centenary celebrations in 2010 with the knowledge that the club has a full membership, a new clubhouse and magnificent course of which to be proud.
