Haggs Castle provides a glorious exception to the old adage that the best golf is always found in the most remote surroundings. To find such a fine course in a secluded setting only minutes away from the bustle of Glasgow city centre is a constant surprise to the visitor and a source of pleasure and pride to countless city golfers.
Set in the magnificent mature parkland of the Pollok Estate, Haggs Castle provides a delightful golfing environment and is a highly regarded venue. The course has been a European Tour venue and has also hosted the Scottish PGA Championship.
The course sits on relatively flat land formed by ancient marine clays and as a result there are only very gentle slopes to contend with. Probably because of this and to aid drainage, raised greens are a characteristic of Haggs Castle and accuracy of approach can be essential.
During the 1990’s the construction of the M77 motorway entailed the loss of some ground to the club and six new holes have been created to redress the balance. Designed by Dave Thomas they keep very much to another theme which previously characterised Haggs Castle – position.
Mr Thomas has undoubtedly enhanced an already fine course and there can be little doubt that Haggs Castle is set to return to its former eminent position as a premier golf venue.
The signature hole is the par-four fourteenth, ‘The Avenue’, stroke index one. This is a 426 yard dog-leg right to left and to have any chance of making the green in regulation your drive has to be at least 230 yards to the middle of the fairway.
The second requires a long shot between a tunnel of trees to a well bunkered two tier green. If you hit left off the tee or don’t manage to keep it straight on the second shot, then you are in the trees!
The course provides a challenging but fair test of golf and with woodland coming into play on many holes and with a number of strategically placed bunkers it makes for some interesting course management decisions.
